The Brotherhood are a five to eleven-piece wedding band, based in Newport and over the Severn for Cheltenham weddings. Cheltenham sits at the eastern edge of the patch we work from South Wales, and it is a town with an unusual split: Regency assembly rooms in the centre that were built for music two hundred years before anyone thought about a PA, and manor houses on the outskirts where the evening is a straightforward country-house party.

Those two kinds of room want different things from a band, and it is worth knowing which one you are booking before you decide on a lineup.

Cheltenham wedding venues

Manor by the Lake

An Italianate mansion sitting on its own lake on the western edge of town, and the Cheltenham venue we have played most. The function room was built to hold a party rather than converted into one - the proportions work, the dancefloor is in front of the band instead of off to one side, and the lakeside grounds give a photographer somewhere to go through the afternoon.

Cheltenham crowds dance, which is not true of every town. Manor by the Lake is where we have most consistently seen a floor fill early and stay full.

Cowley Manor

A Grade II listed mansion in fifty-five acres of Cotswold parkland about ten minutes south of town, off the A435. We played a private party here that ran well into the small hours - the estate sits far enough back from anything that a late finish is a conversation with the venue rather than with a neighbour, which is not the case for the town-centre rooms.

The house is contemporary inside rather than chintzy, and the smaller reception spaces suit a stripped-back evening as readily as the main rooms take a full band.

The Regency rooms in town

Pittville Pump Room is the most striking building anyone gets married in around here - a colonnaded Regency spa room at the top of Pittville Park, with the height and hard surfaces that come with it. Rooms like this reward a properly mixed PA rather than more volume; push a band hard into all that stone and plaster and the detail disappears into reverb. It is council-run, so equipment access and unloading are arranged in advance.

No. 131 The Promenade is the other side of the town-centre coin - a boutique townhouse hotel where guests finish the night by walking upstairs or a few doors down the Prom. It is a compact load-in, so we simply come in earlier and have the room ready well ahead of you.

For both, the useful question to ask your venue is when the band can get in, not just when the band goes on.

The country-house venues outside town

Ellenborough Park at Southam sits beside Cheltenham Racecourse, and is the venue most couples shortlist when they want that side of town. The Greenway at Shurdington is an Elizabethan manor under Crickley Hill with the Orchard Suite as its wedding room. Cleeve Hill Golf Club is the outlier - up on the highest point in the Cotswolds looking back across Cheltenham to the Malverns, a plain function room, and a much cheaper evening than the manor venues.

All three are drive-up load-ins with the parking and access that country-house venues tend to have, which makes the day simpler than a Promenade townhouse.

What size band suits a Cheltenham wedding

The 5-piece Brotherhood - two vocals, guitar, bass, drums and keys - covers most Cheltenham rooms, and the keys matter more here than people expect: in a hard Regency room a keyboard part fills space that a second guitar would only make muddier. The 6-piece adds sax for couples who want more lift through the soul and funk end of the set. Eight-piece and up with brass is for the larger manor ballrooms, where there is enough air in the room to carry it.

We run in-ear monitors rather than floor wedges, and DI the guitar and bass to the desk instead of putting amps on stage. In a townhouse function room that difference is the difference between fitting and not fitting; in the Pump Room it means the only thing making noise in the room is the PA, which is precisely what a room like that needs.

How the evening runs

Cheltenham weddings tend to run late by South Wales standards, so we usually pitch the first set later and shorter than we would at home. The shape is a relaxed opening set of around thirty minutes carrying your first dance, then two fifty-minute sets that do the actual work on the dancefloor, with DJ playlists filling the gaps and running on after we finish. Getting to Cheltenham from South Wales

From Newport it is the Severn crossing and up the M5 - about an hour and a half, much the same as Bath or central Bristol, and closer than a lot of the Cotswold-based bands you will be quoted against. We travel for the day and build load-in around your timings rather than around ours.
