Angels
Robbie WilliamsDecember 2017Newbridge MemoTobias Robertson - lead vocals
Angels is a difficult song to perform honestly. It is enormous, everyone in a British room knows it, and it invites a big vocal performance that usually tips into something overwrought.
This version, filmed in December 2017, goes the other way. Tobias Robertson sings it close and restrained, and the arrangement stays underneath rather than swelling behind him. What that does is put the weight back on the melody instead of on the volume, and it makes the last chorus land because it has somewhere to go rather than having started there.
It is also a song with a very specific job at events. It gets requested for funerals and memorial moments almost as often as for celebrations, and it comes up in wedding ceremonies where someone is being remembered. Playing it with restraint matters more in those settings than anywhere else.
Produced and directed by Jack Browse and Greg Fisher at Roll Your Own Productions, mixed by Jason Norman - the same team behind The Joker.
