I Won't Back Down

The second remote recording, from May 2020, and a very different proposition to the first.

Tom Petty is not a name that appears often in a function band set, which is part of why we went for it. Heartland rock is built on simplicity - the arrangement here is close to what is on the record because there is nothing to add without ruining it. That made it a good fit for remote recording, where complexity is the enemy. Fewer moving parts means fewer places for six separately recorded performances to drift apart.

It also gave us something to do with a rock feel at a point when the previous session had been a contemporary R&B track. Recording in isolation, variety was mostly what was keeping people interested.

Doing this one made us wonder why we had not played more Petty over the years.

The first of these was Underdog, recorded a fortnight earlier.
