The Brotherhood Trio Live in Merlin's Bar, Celtic Manor

Merlin’s Bar at Celtic Manor, August 2019. Three of us, in a corner, at a volume where the bar keeps working.

This is the opposite end of the range from the showband footage and it is worth seeing both. A trio in a bar is not a scaled-down function band - it is a different job. Nobody is going to dance, nobody is facing the band, and the measure of success is that the room feels better than it did when you walked in. Play it like a gig and you clear the place.

Practically, the difference is in what you leave out. No drum kit, minimal amplification, and a setlist weighted towards songs that work at conversational volume. Most of what we play in this format overlaps with the jazz trio material rather than the dancefloor sets.

It comes up more often than people expect on wedding days, usually to cover the gap between a ceremony and the wedding breakfast, with the full band coming in later. Splitting the day between the two is generally cheaper than booking two separate acts, and it means the same musicians are with you all day.
