The Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor, summer 2015, and the useful thing about this one is the contrast.
We have two completely separate arrangements of Billie Jean. The jazz trio version is a reharmonised, guitar-led piece of dinner music. This is the other one - full band, played straight, aimed squarely at a dancefloor.
Keeping both in the book means one booking can cover an entire event without repeating itself, and it is a decent illustration of why we describe the trio and the full band as one operation rather than two separate products. The early part of an evening and the late part need different music, and it is the same musicians either way.
An event like the Celebrity Cup is a good example of why that matters. A golf tournament with a black tie evening attached has several distinct phases in one day, and the music has to change shape across them rather than arriving at nine o’clock and playing one kind of set.
