Johnny B. Goode survives in function band repertoire for a practical reason: it is one of a very small number of songs that reliably works for people in their seventies and people in their twenties at the same moment. Most of the set has to be aimed at part of a room. This is not.
It is also a guitar player’s song in a way that most of what we play is not. The opening figure is one of the most quoted things in popular music and there is no way to fake it, which makes it a decent test of whether a band can actually play as opposed to reproduce.
Where it earns its place now is milestone birthdays - sixtieth and seventieth parties in particular, where the guest list runs across three generations and the first half hour of the dancing decides how the rest of the night goes.
