My Favourite Things - The Brotherhood Jazz Trio | Live Video

By some distance the most-watched thing we have ever put online, and almost none of that audience is booking a band. Guitarists find it, which was not the plan.

The song has a long history as a jazz vehicle, and the reason is the harmony - it moves between two tonal centres in a way that gives a soloist a lot of room without ever losing the tune. That is rare in a piece that a general audience also recognises instantly, which is exactly what makes it useful at events. Children spot it from the film, adults hear a jazz standard, and both are happy.

There is a quote buried in the middle section that we have never named, and people are still guessing in the comments a decade later.

Practically, this is drinks reception and wedding breakfast music. Guitar-led, no drums, volume set so a room of people can talk over it comfortably. It is the format we suggest for the first few hours of a wedding day before the full band comes in, and for corporate dinners where music before the speeches should not be competing with the room.
