Have You Met Miss Jones
Rodgers & HartApril 2014Matt Sage - guitar
The one actual standard in the set, and it is here for a reason.
The bridge of Have You Met Miss Jones is a well-known piece of writing - a sequence that moves through three keys in eight bars, and one that every jazz musician has had to learn to navigate. It is the part of the tune players are really listening for. Including it alongside the pop reworkings is a way of showing the trio can do the traditional job properly, not just novelty arrangements.
For events it fits the more formal end of things. Black tie dinners, drinks receptions in a hotel, corporate evenings where the brief is genuinely “background jazz” rather than anything with a wink in it. If you want a room to feel expensive before anybody has made a speech, this is the register.
It is also the shortest video in the series at under two minutes, and the earliest - filmed in 2014 when the trio was still working out what it was for.
The rest of the trio’s material sits closer to pop and soul reworked, which is where most bookings end up.
