Playing the Awards Ceremony, Not Just the Party
Award ceremony walk-ons played live - a sting for each presenter, a lift for each winner, then the full showband for the party afterwards.
We play the walk-ons at award ceremonies live, then the party set afterwards, at ceremonies across South Wales and the Midlands.
What we play
Two pieces per category. A short building sting to carry the presenter from their table to the stage, then a separate lift as the winner’s name is read - held through the walk up, the handshake and the photo, and landed for the acceptance. The length of each one is decided on the night, watching the stage.
Everyone is on in-ear monitors rather than wedges, and the musical director talks to the whole band through them. The events team coordinate the MD, often over a separate monitoring system nobody else hears, or the MD times the entries off what is being said on stage. A change to the running order reaches every player at once.
Drums, bass, keys and guitars play the stings. The vocalists come in for the set afterwards.
Seventeen categories is the most we have played in a night, at an awards dinner in the ICC Wales main hall in September 2026, rehearsed with the compere in the gap between the conference finishing and the doors opening.
For a Casino Royale themed night at ICC Wales in May 2025 the music followed the theme: “You Know My Name” in the set, and the Monty Norman James Bond Theme in John Barry’s arrangement on every announcement.
Where the band sits
That is the organiser’s call. At Celtic Manor we have been at the back of the room with the flying line arrays covering the floor and the awards run from the front stage, and the other way round as well - a dedicated award-band stage at the rear, the main band on the main stage, moving between the two without a gap. At the Ironbridge Suite in Telford the awards ran from a side stage next to the dancefloor, and when the formal part finished the delegates turned ninety degrees onto the floor.
The full showband plays the evening after the ceremony.
