DEPOT is where a Cardiff company goes when it does not want a hotel ballroom. It is a converted warehouse off Dumballs Road - exposed steel, a serious in-house lighting rig, room to move and a festival feel a function suite cannot fake. We play it as the alternative to the carpet-and-chandelier circuit: product launches, tech-company Christmas parties, awards nights for clients who want the room to feel like a gig rather than a dinner.
A gig venue that comes with its own production
The thing that sets DEPOT apart from every hotel and country house on the circuit is that it arrives with the production already in it. Cardiff’s largest dedicated live-music and events space is a 30,000 square-foot warehouse on Curran Road running up to around 2,500 across two interconnecting rooms, and venue hire comes with a full-spec house PA, a proper lighting rig, in-house technical support, roller-shutter access, two bars and two permanent street-food kitchens. For a planner that is a stack of suppliers you do not have to book: the sound, the lights and the technical crew are part of the room. We integrate with what is there rather than trucking in a duplicate rig - our engineer works their system and rig, and any backline we bring rolls straight in off the street through the shutter. The festival lighting means the band looks like a show with nothing extra on the invoice.
Playing a hard, festival-lit room
A warehouse is a live, reflective space, and that is the one thing a band has to know going in - it rewards an engineer who can sit a mix in a hard room rather than letting it wash, and everyone on in-ears, no wedges, to keep the stage spill down. The room and the rig want a big sound to match: for an evening event we bring the full showband, eight pieces and up with brass, because DEPOT at full tilt is built for a gig, not a polite function set. The night runs that way too - street food, the bars open, the band as the centrepiece rather than an after-dinner slot, two hour-long sets mashed and medleyed together with a DJ around them, and a crowd that treats the room like the gig space it is. For an awards night it tightens up: presentations first, band after, the floor flipping from seated to standing as the trophies finish.
