We played the ICC Wales New Year’s Eve Extravaganza to see 2025 out.
The Apple Tree Theory first
The Apple Tree Theory opened the night while guests arrived for the cocktail reception, with interactive performers working the room and a street food market running alongside. An acoustic three-piece in a hall the size of the ICC Wales main hall is a strange balance to strike and they hold it well - the room feels smaller than it is while people are still finding their table.
The run to midnight
Then us, playing the floor-fillers, with the crowd building song on song as the clock went. A New Year’s Eve set paces differently to any other night: you are not building to the end of your own set, you are building to a fixed point on a clock that somebody else owns, so the last twenty minutes have to arrive at midnight already at full tilt rather than getting there.
Midnight
We stopped the music for the countdown and the room took it. Confetti, the giant screens carrying the London fireworks live, then straight into Auld Lang Syne with the whole hall singing it.
One more song after that to hand the floor over, then DJ Sam Tweaks took it through to 1:30am.
