1. Start Early
The best wedding bands book up 12-18 months in advance, especially for peak season dates (May-September). Start your search early to have the widest selection of options.
2. Watch Live Performances
Videos are edited. If a band plays public gigs or showcases, go to one - you learn more from ten minutes in the room than from an hour of clips.
3. Consider Your Venue
Ask whether the band has played your venue, and ask about the sound limiter if there is one. Limiters vary: some pull the level down, some cut the power to the stage. A band that has played the room knows which one it is.
4. Check Their Setlist
Does the band play music that suits your taste and your guests? A great wedding band should cover multiple decades and genres to keep everyone dancing.
5. Ask About Equipment
Most bands bring their own PA and lighting, but not all venues let you use it - some rooms have an installed system you have to mix into. Check which yours is, and check who is supplying front-of-house if there is also a production company involved.
6. Read Reviews
Look for reviews from recent clients. Pay attention to comments about professionalism, punctuality, and how they handle requests.
7. Discuss Your First Dance
Ask whether the band will learn it live, and tell them the key you want rather than assuming the record’s key. If the recording is the version that means something to you, use the recording - a good band will not be offended.
8. Understand What’s Included
Get clarity on:
- How many sets they play
- Break music (DJ service between sets?)
- Setup and sound check timing
- Travel costs
9. Meet the Band
If you can, meet the band before booking. They will be in the room for the biggest part of your evening.
10. Trust Your Instincts
Go with the band that feels right. If the videos make you want to dance and the emails come back quickly, that is usually the answer.
