A gig day starts a long way before the first song. Here is roughly how one runs.
The Day Before
Preparation starts well before the event. We’re confirming timings, checking equipment, and reviewing any special requests from the client.
- Final confirmation calls with the venue and client
- Loading the van with all equipment
- Reviewing the setlist and any specific song requests
- Checking backup equipment (spare strings, cables, etc.)
Gig Day: Afternoon
We arrive 2-3 hours before we’re due to play.
3:00 PM - Arrive at venue, find load-in access, meet the venue coordinator
3:30 PM - Unload equipment (this alone can take 30-45 minutes for a full band setup)
4:00 PM - Set up drums, backline, and PA system
4:45 PM - Run cables, position speakers, set up lighting
5:15 PM - Sound check each instrument individually
5:45 PM - Full band sound check, adjust monitor mixes
The Performance
By the time guests arrive, everything should be invisible - just a stage ready for music. But we’re constantly working:
- Watching the dance floor to gauge energy
- Adjusting the setlist on the fly
- Managing sound levels as the room fills up
- Coordinating with venue staff for announcements
After the Last Song
The gig isn’t over when the music stops. Pack-down typically takes another hour:
- Careful dismantling of equipment
- Coiling cables properly, which is why they last
- Loading the van in reverse order for the next gig
- Final check to make sure nothing’s left behind
Home Time
By the time we’re driving home it’s usually well past midnight, and somebody is still awake enough to argue about where to stop for food.
